'Proud moment': Indian-origin scientist SP Singh wins national food safety award

Hailing from a family of farmers in Una, Himachal Pradesh, Dr Sukhvinder Pal Singh — fondly called SP Singh in Australia — has been honoured with the Food Safety Award 2025. The national award, presented by the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology, recognises his contributions to food safety.

Mr Singh, now a senior research scientist at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development in New South Wales, says his farming lineage has given him an edge in his work.

With nearly a decade of experience in food safety, Mr Singh is best known for his role in the Melon Project. The initiative was launched to restore consumer confidence in melons after a listeria outbreak caused several cases of rockmelon poisoning.
