20-year-old charged over alleged assault on Punjabi man Charanpreet Singh in Adelaide car park

Adelaide police have charged a 20-year-old man with assault causing harm after he allegedly attacked 22-year-old Charanpreet Singh, an Indian-origin man, over a car parking dispute.


On Saturday, 19 July, Charanpreet Singh was in the city with his wife to see the light show in Adelaide when the incident occurred.

According to police, at about 9:20 pm, officers were called to Kintore Avenue after reports that a group of people had assaulted a man while he was sitting in his car.

“The group dragged the man (Mr Singh) from his car and assaulted him before driving off in a Toyota sedan,” a police spokesperson told SBS Punjabi.

A 20-year-old man was arrested the following day and charged with assault causing harm.

The victim, 22-year-old Charanpreet Singh — an Indian-origin man—sustained multiple injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged.
Speaking with SBS Punjabi, Mr Singh shared details of his injuries.

“Now my nose is also bent to the right side and will require surgery, it’s essentially a facial fracture. I’ve suffered trauma to the head, torn tissue around my left eye, and swelling in my jaw. The swelling in my head still hasn’t gone down,” he said.

The day after the incident, on Sunday, 20 July, police arrested a 20-year-old man at an address in Enfield. He has been charged with assault causing harm and was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on 10 September.
