World-renowned centenarian marathon runner Fauja Singh has died at the age of 114 after being struck by a vehicle in his hometown of Beas, Punjab.
Fauja Singh's son, Harbrinder Singh, spoke to SBS Punjabi, sharing details of his father's final moments, the circumstances of the accident, and funeral arrangements.
“He was totally fit and went for a walk every day,” his son Harbrinder Singh told SBS Punjabi.
“On Monday, he went out for his usual walk when an unidentified vehicle hit him. He was taken to the hospital and received treatment for three hours, but he eventually succumbed to his injuries.”
Known globally as the 'Turbaned Tornado', Fauja Singh inspired millions by taking up long-distance running in his 80s and completing marathons well past the age of 100.
He made global headlines after becoming the face of Adidas, replacing former footballer David Beckham in a major campaign - a move that symbolised his rising status as a symbol of identity, and resilience.
An icon of healthy ageing, Fauja Singh remains a respected figure in the Sikh community and worldwide.
"His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched on and off the track," said his son.
