AUSTRALIA: THE 2018 PETRO JACYK INTERNATIONAL UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE COMPETITION

SBS interview with the Chairwoman Dr Yana Ostapenko from the Ukrainian Education Council of Australia. The Competition is open to all children and young people in Australia, whether or not they are enrolled in a formal Ukrainian-language course at a school or university - age of participants between 9 and 21. The goal of the competition is to promote the knowledge and use of the Ukrainian language among children and young people in Ukraine and throughout the world. Also this important international event is aimed at improving Ukrainian language skills, establishing the languages stature and raising its prestige. The Ukrainian language competition was established in 2000 with the support of the distinguished Canadian-Ukrainian philanthropist Petro Jacyk. The competition has now expanded to encompass more than 30 countries. Each year more than 5 million young people take part. The Competition in Australia is conducted by the Mykola Zerov Centre for Ukrainian Studies at Monash University and the Ukrainian Education Council of Australia (UECA).
