On 1 September 2018, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) together with its partners, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance and National Museum “Holodomor Victims Memorial”, launches the international action “Light a candle of remembrance!” to mark the 85th anniversary of the genocide of the Ukrainian people, the Holodomor. Over 85 days until International Holodomor Memorial Day on 24 November 2018, a candle will be lit daily in a different part of the world uniting Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine in remembrance of the innocent victims of the genocidal policy of the Stalin regime, while raising awareness of the issues of human rights, respect and tolerance. The remembrance flame will begin its 85-day journey across five continents in Kyiv, Ukraine, at the National Museum “Holodomor Victims Memorial” and conclude on 24 November 2018 in conjunction with the Ukrainian national commemoration of The 85th anniversary of the Holodomor in Kyiv. In 1932, Ukraine, under the rule of Joseph Stalin, suffered a famine affecting the major grain-producing areas in the region. Though there is some debate on the actual cause of the shortage, scholars attribute the famine to Stalin’s policies of forced grain procurement, political repression, and seizure of the 1932 wheat crop being produced in Ukraine. There are many who believe that the famine was deliberately caused in order to murder the Ukrainian people and crush any aspirations of independence from Soviet rule. At the height of the famine in 1933, 28,000 men, women and children in Ukraine were dying every day from hunger and malnourishment. Officially, the death toll is estimated to be more than 4 million, with some calculations even putting it at up to 10 - 12 million. (Holodomor - the Ukrainian word translates to “death by hunger” or “to kill by hunger.” )
