Ola Hamed’s parents fled Lebanon’s civil war in the 1970s. Today, Ola leads Cumberland City Council (NSW), home to nearly 250,000 people from more than 150 countries and 25 faiths, and says multiculturalism has built Australia and remains its greatest strength.
Born in Australia to Muslim parents who migrated from Lebanon in the 1970s, Ola Hamed understands the challenges of migration. As Mayor of Cumberland, she is committed to tackling discrimination and believes migrants from diverse cultures, languages and backgrounds make Australia stronger.
Hamed says multiculturalism is central to Australia’s identity, and a monoculture is neither realistic nor a successful model for the country.
