The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has accepted a racial discrimination complaint against NSW Minister for Multiculturalism Steve Kamper MP and Multicultural NSW—an unprecedented step placing a sitting minister under legal scrutiny. The complaint, lodged by the Alliance Against Islamophobia (AAI) and the Periyar Ambedkar Thoughts Circle of Australia (PATCA), alleges unlawful discrimination and the systemic exclusion of South Asian Muslim and caste-oppressed Hindu communities, including claims of vicarious liability linked to Multicultural NSW leadership. Listen to the perspectives and insights of key voices featured in this podcast.

South Asian Muslim Activists describe the development as a significant step forward, raising concerns about marginalisation and accountability. The Multicultural NSW Minister’s office has reaffirmed its commitment to respect and non-discrimination, while declining further comment during the AHRC process. The Hindu Council of Australia has acknowledged the complaint, noting that no findings have been made and confirming its willingness to participate in conciliation.
