Bushfire smoke and air quality: How to stay safe and informed?

bushfire

Due to bushfires in Victoria, haze, dust, and smoke across large parts of the state and some surrounding areas can affect public health. However, avoiding smoke is even more critical for people with respiratory conditions and asthma. Chief Environmental Scientist at the Environment Protection Authority Victoria, Jane Martin, says reliable information on air quality and public health is essential during such conditions.

According to Jen Martin, EPA Victoria’s Chief Environmental Scientist, if you have vulnerable household members, consider staying with friends/family in an area with better air quality until conditions improve.
She emphasised that Smoke can cause short-term discomfort. In healthy adults, symptoms such as irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat (including coughing) usually go away once you leave the smoky area.
