International women’s day: Migrant women and mental health in a new environment

INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY WEB HERO v2.jpg

Destiny Dewis breaks down how investing in gender equality means teaching women financial literacy skills.

Every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day is observed around the world. In a new country, women’s responsibilities often change, and family expectations can increase. These pressures may lead to mental and emotional stress. How can this stress be managed, and what free support services are available in Australia? Find out in this podcast.

Many newly arrived women in Australia face an inner struggle between family expectations and personal freedom. Psychologist Samara Shiraz emphasises that prioritising mental health and seeing self-care as important, not guilty, is key to achieving inner peace.

Ongoing fatigue, irritability, and emotional emptiness can signal silent mental strain, and staying silent often increases the burden. She adds that after migration, social isolation, language barriers, and limited networks can deepen sadness, making community support, professional counselling, and healthy boundaries especially important.
