Almost 80 per cent of participants in a recent survey conducted by the Australian Human Rights Commission had experienced some form of unfavourable treatment based on their religion, race, or ethnicity. Australia’s Race Discrimination Commissioner Chin Tan dwells upon the survey’s findings and his proposed National Anti-Racism Framework.

Sharing the Stories of Australian Muslims is a survey conducted by the Australian Human Rights Commission to collect information on the concerns, priorities and experiences of Australian Muslims related to hate, violence and negative public commentary in the wake of the 2019 Christchurch mosque attack.

One in four (23 per cent) respondents of the survey said that they felt unable to speak up or act when they experienced discrimination.

Australia’s Race Discrimination Commissioner Chin Tan, who initiated the project, told SBS Urdu that the survey report highlights community-identified solutions to the challenges raised in connection to each of its themes.

Mr Chin aims to work in partnership with all stakeholders including the federal government and various sectors of Australian society.
Dismantling racism is a joint responsibility and will require a coordinated effort and that is the primary theme of the proposed National Anti-Racism Framework
A National Anti-Racism Framework can play a significant role in Australia’s response to Islamophobia and its efforts to promote social cohesion by outlining a coordinated, shared vision to tackle racism including Islamophobia in Australia.
