According to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), police-recorded victims of theft increased by six per cent in 2024, reaching their highest level since 2003. Will Milne, Program Manager (a/g), Education and Crime Branch, People and Place Division at the ABS, stated, “In 2024, there were 595,660 recorded victims of theft.

The theft rate dropped in ACT, followed by SA (ABS).
The largest rise over the past year was in Victoria, up 29 per cent, followed by Tasmania, which rose by 11 per cent. (ABS)
