Renowned singer Ustad Rafaqat Ali Khan of the Sham Chaurasi Gharana spoke to SBS Urdu about his Australian tour, his international musical journey, classical training and the recognition he received through Tu Kuja Man Kuja. He also shared his views on the future of classical music, emerging artists and the challenges facing music in Pakistan.
Ustad Rafaqat Ali Khan says the centuries-old tradition of the Sham Chaurasi Gharana and the classical training he received at home provided the foundation for his musical career. He recalls performing in India before renowned artists and presenting a ghazal to thousands at Jashn-e-Rekhta as some of the most memorable experiences of his career.

According to Ustad Rafaqat Ali Khan, classical music will never disappear despite changing times and new technology, because its elements remain at the heart of genres such as ghazal and qawwali. He advises emerging artists to focus on learning their craft and developing their work rather than chasing fame. He also stresses the need for greater institutional support for arts and culture in Pakistan.
