The Australian Red Cross has welcomed the announcement of $12.1 million in funding over five years for a new program to provide specialised and early intervention support for those experiencing - or at risk - of forced marriage.

Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth says the initiative will support children and young people as victim-survivors and provide essential access to counselling and emergency accommodation.

Lina Garcia-Daza from the Australian Red Cross says the focus on early intervention is much needed.

She told Biwa Kwan, it adds to the charity's work through its Support for Trafficked People Program, which helps those who have left a situation of exploitation.

The national domestic violence hotline is 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732). The Support for Trafficked People Program is contactable on 03 9345 1800. In an emergency, call 000.
