A week after being elected into the deputy position, Kevin Hogan says the National Party was forced to breakaway from its traditional alliance with the Liberal Party over issues that were considered non-negotiable.

But they included supermarket divestiture powers, a multi-billion dollar regional fund, bush telecommunications and a continued commitment to nuclear energy.

Mr Hogan says the party offered to step back from the original demands for state owned nuclear power plants, and just advocate for the ban on nuclear power to be lifted.

He spoke to SBS Chief Political Correspondent Anna Henderson.
