Vic boy's burns warning after stove mishap

A Victorian family, whose eight-year-old was left needing surgery after his pyjamas caught fire near a stove, is warning others about the dangers of burns.

There's one breakfast eight-year-old Kieran Neville will never forget, after an attempt at making porridge left him in the burns unit needing surgery.

But the Victorian family is using their frightening story to warn parents and children about the dangers of burns.

"I was cooking my porridge," Kieran said of the September 2017 accident at Warrnambool, in a video released as part of a national campaign.

But he was left screaming in pain after leaning too close to the gas stove, causing his pyjamas to catch fire.

He was flown to Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital needing a skin graft and physical therapy to regain feeling in his burned torso.

For children like Kieran, the most dangerous part of the house is the kitchen, Kidsafe Australia says.

"Burns in the kitchen usually occur whilst a child is near an adult preparing food or hot drinks," the group's spokeswoman Melanie Courtney said.

Data from the Burns Registry of Australia and New Zealand shows nearly 1000 children from both countries were admitted to hospital with burns in 2016/17.

Scalds were the most common types of turns, followed by contact and flame burns.

Royal Children's Hospital burns surgeon Warwick Teague said it was important to immediately douse a burn in cold water for at least 20 minutes.

"Burn injuries really do have a long-lasting effect on the whole family, so we need to do everything we can to prevent burns from occurring," he said.
