The heart of Australia will become home to thousands of solar-powered light blooms reflecting the colours of the desert sky.

British artist Bruce Munro is bringing his exhibition, The Field of Light, close to Uluru in Australia's Red Centre.

Mr Munro told the ABC that while the exhibition - composed of 15 tonnes of solar-powered lights - has already been displayed across the US, Mexico and the UK, it was Uluru that inspired the sweep of bulbs.

"I now have the honour and privilege of returning to create an iteration of this artwork for the place that inspired it," Mr Munro says.

"A work conceived in the red desert returns to its birthplace springing from the dry ground."
