A mental welfare check by police has resulted in the shooting death of a 26-year-old man in Queensland.

Police were called to a Mount Louisa, Townsville address just after 12.10am on Sunday, with two officers arriving at the residence an hour later.

Queensland Police Service (QPS) said in a statement the man allegedly advanced at the attending officers with a knife before being shot.

QPS confirmed at the time of the shooting six police officers were present.

Queensland police said the officers performed first aid, however their efforts were unsuccessful and the man was declared deceased at the scene.
Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Lawson said police attempted to use a taser to disarm him, but it was “ineffective”.

Acting Chief Superintendent Lawson addressed questions during a press conference on Sunday where he was asked why it took police an hour to respond.

“We were responding to a number of incidents, and as a result of priorities and police being available — the first available unit got there at 1.15am,” he said.

It's understood that family members were present at the home during the time of the call and shooting and were attempting to de-escalate the situation.

The matter is under investigation by Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner.
