A dozen activists have put together a social media campaign calling for a referendum to be held on a constitutionally enshrined voice to parliament representing Australia’s Indigenous people.

The Voice Truth Treaty campaign will formally begin on Sunday and was inspired by the same-sex marriage ‘yes’ campaign which overlayed a rainbow banner on Facebook profile pictures.

It calls for people to show their support for the Uluru statement by updating their social media profiles to include a heart-shaped logo and the slogan ‘we support the statement’.

The campaign has been spearheaded by Thomas Mayor, the former Uluru statement working group co-chair, who hopes the campaign will send a message to Canberra.

“We want to see a great groundswell of support and we want that to influence the politicians,” he told NITV.

“It’s up to us now to show them that there is support for this and it's widespread.”

Mr Mayor will launch a ‘week of action’ at Artsite Galleries in the Sydney suburb of Camperdown on Saturday afternoon.

It coincides with a Maruku Arts exhibition which will be opened by filmmaker Rachel Perkins.
