Aboriginal Art Sells At Record Price

The largest ever sale of Aboriginal artworks has recorded a total of 7.5 million dollars worth of sales in just two nights at an auction in Sydney.

Almost 250 works went under the hammer at Sotheby's Auctioneers, many of them being sold at more than twice their expected price.

The auction attracted huge interest from overseas and about 50 percent of the works sold will leave the country.

Sotheby's Crispin Gutteridge says most will remain in private collections.

"There were representatives from galleries bidding but I think most of the successful bids actually went to private individuals, to collectors and there's a very strong representation of a group of indigenous collectors overseas in both Europe and America . So there's a strong interest from the overseas collectors."
