A team of army tradesmen has been working there as part the federal government's program to improve living conditions in Indigenous communities.

Fregon lies about five hours south-west of Alice Springs and in the last five months the population of 300 has grown.

Sargent Darren Bath said the army members had been enjoying their stay.

"It's been good. The weather has been up and down. It gets really hot and really cold at the same time, but we're kind of used to it so it's good," he said.

The army has been building the community a children-and-family centre as part of the Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Program to improve conditions in remote communities.

Sargent Bath said the army’s work in the area has had positive outcomes for everyone.

"As well as giving something to the community it provides an excellent training opportunity to the tradesmen we have in the squadron to keep up their skills, as well as providing the community with something we leave behind," he said.
