Marvel Studios has won its first Oscar at the 91st Academy Awards with the blockbuster film 'Black Panther' collecting a gong for Best Costume Design.

The win made Ruth Carter the first African-American woman to win an award in the category. 

“Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king,” Ms Carter said in her acceptance speech.

Black Panther was nominated for seven awards and also picked up the Oscar for Best Original Sound Track and Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart's work in Production Design. Ms Beachler also made history as the first African-American to win an award in the Best Production Design category.  

Actress Regina King took home her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the film 'If Beale Street Could Talk' and director Spike Lee claimed his first win with his film 'BlaKkKlansman' which was given the nod for Best Adapted Screenplay.
