Western Sydney's Indigenous Christmas event has been running for more than seven years to strengthen Aboriginal individuals, families and communities throughout the festive season.

Families gathered at Butucarbin Aboriginal Corporation to celebrate culture with Mt Druitt's very own "Black Santa."

Community development worker Jack Gibson said the day wasn't just about the act of giving.

"This is important because it brings the community together, and I think it strengthens the community, It connects them," he said.

The children were able to understand the symbolism of black Santa and what he meant, not only for their families, but for the wider community.

Sam Whitton, who dressed as Santa for the event, said it’s important for younger Indigenous generations to have a recognisable figure for Christmas.

"Brown kids and fair kids always see a white Santa Claus, and it would be good to show them that there’s also a black Santa Claus, something to give them something to believe in.

The celebration of culture was concluded with traditional dancing, present giving and koori carols from the Mt Druitt Indigenous Children's Choir.
