Flying under the Aboriginal flag, the nine Tribal Warrior crew members were ready to sail into history in this year's Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, but missed the entry deadline.
However, they still set sail on Boxing Day as a relay vessel travelling alongside the race, and are doing their best to make it to Hobart on board the Southern Excellence II.
NITV journalist Danny Teece-Johnson spoke with Isaiah Dawe from the crew via satellite phone on day three of the event.
"We're currently at the Bass Straight, 48 nautical miles form Flinders island," Isaiah told NITV.
"Some of the things that have happened, you're just surrounded by water everywhere out here, there's massive waves. We've had some complications so far, the halyard broke and fell over the side of the yacht and that was in the pitch black of night, getting smashed by these waves."
They are 100 nautical Miles from St Helens off the Tasmanian coast, with about another 10 hours of sailing along the coast before heading in Hobart.
They have broken three keel bolts which means the yacht is taking on some water and they have to bucket out the water every 30 minutes.
They expect to arrive tomorrow morning or lunchtime.
They said they are tired, but in good spirits and they are going to make it.
