A spokesperson from Senator Peris’ office confirmed with NITV News on Thursday that a casual conversation did occur earlier this year when Goodes was still playing for the Sydney Swans.
However, the spokesperson explained, the discussion was informal and more of a friendly chat than a serious political proposal.
NITV can confirm that no electorate or seat was specified during the casual conversation.
The spokesperson said the purpose of the chat was to raise the possibility of politics and put out a general request to get on board with the federal Opposition.
Fairfax Media has reported that Goodes’ manager, Lucy Mills said she was "not aware" of any approach by Labor, or about any plans for the footy player to go into politics.
It also reported last week that Goodes was a hopeful Greens candidate in the Sydney seat of Grayndler.
Yet NITV can now confirm that the AFL legend did not nominate in the current election for the federal seat of Grayndler, in Sydney’s inner west, with nominations having closed last Friday.
The seat of Grayndler is currently held by Labor MP and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Anthony Albanese.
Recent media reports also claim Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is keen to talk to the former AFL player about pursuing the prospect of a political career.
The Andyamathanha/Narungga man hung up his AFL boots in September this year before being signed on by retail chain, David Jones, as a brand ambassador.
