Dan Sultan has cancelled his upcoming shows after being charged with indecent assault.

The singer-songwriter has cancelled appearances at Port Fairy Music Festival and Perth Festival, and is due to face a Melbourne court next month over the alleged incident, which is understood to have occurred in 2008.

A Victorian police spokesperson said in a statement "Fawkner Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation team detectives have charged a 36-year-old man following a sexual assault that occurred in Coburg in September 2008."

"A man from Connells Point, News South Wales has been charged with one count of indecent assault.

He was summonsed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 16 March 2020," the statement read.

Perth Festival organisers said in a statement that Sultan had cancelled all performance commitments.

"His management said he would allow the legal process to take its course before making any further comment," the statement read.

Sultan was also one of the headline acts for Port Fair Festival in Victoria, but cancelled his performance in the wake of the charges.

He was also set to perform at a fundraiser event, alongside John Butler and Kasey Chambers at The Athenaeum in Melbourne.

The news comes shortly after his win at the ARIA's for Best Children's Album for his record Nali and Friends.
