Despite the downgrade of ex-tropical cyclone Nora, rainfall is yet to ease as Queensland’s top end is hit with a torrential downpour and strong winds.

Cyclone Nora made landfall on Sunday morning crossing the near Pormpuraaw on the Cape York Peninsula as a Category 3 storm.
A number of Indigenous communities are in the ex tropical cyclone’s path as it brought down trees, tore off roofs and caused significant damage to energy infrastructure.

Reportedly there’s 230 homes and business in Pormpuraaw without power.

Overnight the low pressure system has been forecasted to cause flash flooding across Cairns, Port Douglas and Mossman with road closures due to debris on the road already in place.

A Cairns shopping centre was also flooded as well as an underground carpark.

Some schools in North Queensland are also closed as the community begins the clean up process.

The low pressure system continues to head west towards southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters.
