It was a move which divided West Australians, was criticised by the Federal Government, and had local businesses up in arms.
Fremantle’s mayor, Dr Brad Pettitt moved 2017's Australia Day’s celebration to January 28 to be more culturally inclusive and respectful.
His move proved to be a success.
On January 28 this year, more than 15000 people gathered in the port city in Western Australia.
John Butler, Dan Sultan and Mama Kin were a part of the inaugural line up for the event.
Next year’s lineup has huge Indigenous power with Arnhem Land’s very own, rising music star Baker Boy set to perform.
It’s been a big year for the Cloud 9 hit singer Baker Boy, who left his former dance group, Djuki Mala and has been establishing himself as a solo artist.

He won Triple J Unearthed's competition to perform at the National Indigenous Music Awards and achieved his goal of being the first Indigenous artist to rap in language.
Also on hand for the celebration includes Indigenous dance group, Djuki Mala who will also be in Perth for the Perth Fringe Festival.
The dance group told NITV News that it’s an honour to be part of the One Day in Fremantle event.
“Celebrating Changing The Date, and being among thousands of other Australians that are also celebrating diversity and inclusivity, whilst acknowledging the true history of this country is an absolute priority for us.
“Our hope is that in years to come it won't just be once a year that we have an opportunity to celebrate inclusivity, but that the rest of the country will follow suit and that this will lead to a Treaty where everyday is inclusive and equitable,” the group said.
Rounding out the Indigenous talent is Gina Williams, who MC’d the event last year, she told NITV News she’s excited to be back at the event.
“I feel honoured and proud to be part of this incredibly inclusive and beautiful event, and I’m looking forward to celebrating with a stellar lineup of artists and folks.”
In August of 2016 when the city of Fremantle announced their plans to celebrations of Australia Day to January 28, they were hit with a wide range of criticism.
“The feeling in the crowd was just amazing, with people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to celebrate everything that is great about being Australian.”
From the Prime Minister, to the Premiere and Indigenous leaders, as well as local businesses, many West Australians and Australians were outraged.
However Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt, said the inaugural event earlier this year was the best event he’s ever been involved in.
“The feeling in the crowd was just amazing, with people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to celebrate everything that is great about being Australian,” he said.
One Day in Fremantle will take place on January 28, Kate Miller- Heidke and DJ Kevin Parker from Tame Impala will also be performing.
