Indigenous producers lead the way in new 360/VR technology

Maoriland festival goers gets an insight into how 360 technology is being adapted and used in Australia for social and political development for Indigenous Australians.

Australia’s INDIGI LAB, NITV and Image Matrix have teamed up with the Māoriland Film Festival to host workshops and panel discussions that inspire the use the latest technology in Indigenous storytelling this past week.

“You can feel the cultural and richness in the people here and it was such an honor to be able to present the Aboriginal flag to Māoriland on behalf of NITV" commented NITV Producer, Danny Teece-Johnson. 

Over the week the team consisting of INDIGI LAB, NITV and IMage Matrix have run workshops to provide specialist skills in 360 storytelling, VR production and drone operation for youth as part of the Māoriland Film Festival.

“Our first workshop was held at a traditional Maori school, Te Kura - a - iwi -o -Whakatipuranga Rua Mano and the youth just took to the 360 technology and their 360 Haka performance gave us all goosebumps" said INDIGI LAB Founder and CEO, Luke Briscoe. 

In what’s believed to be a New Zealand first, the world famous Maori Haka was captured in 360 video as part of the Māoriland Film Festival.

“I never doubted the power of 360 video but when you see the amazement on the faced of the youth and even the seasoned filmmakers.” Says Image Matrix founder, Djuro Sen.

Māoriland Film Festival is an international festival that celebrates Indigenous voices and storytelling in film. Each March, Māoriland presents a selection of the most distinctive Indigenous works from around the globe. Hosted in Ōtaki, New Zealand, Māoriland is inspired by the mauri of its location. Māoriland Film Festival is an international indigenous film festival that celebrates indigenous voices and story telling in film. Each March, Māoriland brings films and their creators to Ōtaki on New Zealand’s Kapiti Coast for five days of screenings, workshops and special events.
