In a bid to increase diversity on their platform, Instagram have partnered with Screen Australia to offer grans worth $7600 to up-and-coming First Nations content creators.

The grants will offer multiple months of training on how to create Reels or IGTV content, as well as mentoring and networking opportunities.

Applications are open until June 17 - with those applying asked to shoot a one-minute video about themselves, their profile and the communities they connect to.

Nyul-Nyul, Bardie and Yawuru woman Cecilia Raftery told NITV News she would be applying.

“We all know that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are often misrepresented in mainstream media so I’ve always believed that social media is such a key tool in being able to represent ourselves,” she said.
“With an app like Instagram that’s constantly updating and changing, it’s important to continually learn and stay up to date with new features and tools.

“The First Nations Creator Program sounds like such an amazing way to do this.”

Head of First Nations at Screen Australia, Penny Smallacombe said she’s “excited” to see what voices come through the program.

“First Nations people are the oldest storytellers in the world and social media has made creating and sharing content easier than ever,” she said.

“We are excited to partner with Instagram Australia so we can identify and nurture new voices on this platform.”

The winning applicants will be announced in August.
