NAIDOC Artist of the Year - the story of Daren Dunn

Daren Dunn, a proud Gamilaroi man from Coonabarabran in NSW, is dedicated to art, culture and ensuring the wellbeing of his people.

Daren combines art with his passion for sport and takes his paintings around the world where they can be seen from the United Arab Emirates, Italy and Russia to China, the US, Japan and Ireland.

He has recently been commissioned to produce custom hand-painted designs for some of the world’s most prominent athletes including David Beckham, Ricardo Kaka, Rory McIlroyand and Roy Jones Junior.

Daren remains committed to supporting his people back home. He wants to nurture Indigenous youth to ensure education for Indigenous children remains strong now and for future generations.
He has dedicated himself to teaching in both public and private school systems for 23 years, providing countless Indigenous students with growth and opportunities, many of whom have been at serious risk of disengaging from education.

Daren has been working with Lurnea High School students, implementing and carrying out the "Get Back on Ya Feet" program through teaching them Aboriginal art and culture to empower them. The program has been acknowledged for giving these children confidence, improving their behaviour and increasing rates of school attendance.

Recently he has been negotiating with SVITZER, a tug boat service, to hand paint five boats to be stationed around the world between Australia and Denmark.

He also contributes to the sporting arena, supporting Aboriginal athletes such as Daniel Geale, NRL elite Greg Inglis and Johnathon Thurston.
