The Northern Territory Chief Minister has written to Treaty Commissioner Mick Dodson to say the government has 'lost faith' in his ability to perform the role amid allegations of verbal abuse.
It is alleged Mr Dodson threatened an Aboriginal woman at a football game in Darwin in January.
It has also been reported by the NT News that a second woman has made allegations of a similar nature, stemming from an incident before Mr Dodson was appointed to the role.
On Friday, Chief Minister Michael Gunner said in a letter that the 71-year-old cannot continue in the job while the allegations were ongoing.
"I strongly condemn any threatening or aggressive behaviour, towards any individual, in either an official or unofficial capacity," he said.
"The role of the Treaty Commissioner cannot be fulfilled and the important work of the treaty progressed while these allegations are ongoing.
"We have therefore lost faith in your ability to perform the role."
Mr Gunner also said the women making the allegations needed to be heard and Prof Dodson had the right to defend himself.
It is understood Mr Dodson will resign.

"To be clear, I strongly condemn any threatening or aggressive behaviour, towards any other individual, particularly from senior officials." she said in a statement.
The Nunggubuya and Wanindilyakwa woman is calling for a meeting with Mr Dodson.
"I have requested that the Commissioner meet with me to discuss the impact of the allegation on his role as Treaty Commissioner and the important work the Treaty Commission is undertaking to progress conversations for all Territorians." she said in a statement to NITV news.
Mr Dodson, a Yawuru man, was named the Australian of the Year in 2009 for his work advocating for the rights of First Nations people.
He was appointed NT's Treaty Commissioner in 2019 and is a former chief executive of the Northern Land Council.
Mr Dodson declined to comment.
