PM faces questions on forced removal of Indigenous children

The Prime Minister has faced questions about the forced removal of Aboriginal children from their parents in New South Wales while on his week-long stay in the Northern Territory.

Tony Abbott has promised to govern for Indigenous Australians and this week has been making good on a commitment to spend a week in Indigenous communities each year.

This week he's running the nation from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.

He spent much of yesterday's news conference in Yirrkala talking about measures to reduce truancy rates.

But there was another subject that was also raised - a raid in January that saw police in riot gear storming a home in outback News South Wales to forcibly remove children from their parents.

NITV broke the story after getting access to some footage of the raid that took place about 6 in the morning in Moree on January 15.

The Department of Family and Community Services, or FACS, says the police attended to protect its caseworkers while police say the operation only involved local officers who were there to prevent a breach of the peace.

The children have since been returned to their family.

NITV reporter Myles Morgan is travelling with the Prime Minister, and he told Greg Dyett, he asked Tony Abbott for his views on the raid.
