There is a new territory and federal push underway to expand visitor numbers in Kakadu National Park.
Northern Territory Tourism Minster Lauren Moss said she has written to federal minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Nigel Scullion, asking him to work with the NT government on the issue.
“I am yet to hear back from him. Improving access into Kakadu is a significant issue for local tourism operators who would benefit greatly from Kakadu being open for more of the year,” she told the NT Times.
“It would also provide a significant boost into the Top End economy outside of the Dry season.”
Senator Scullion said he welcomed the idea of closer cooperation and had written to federal trade minister Steve Ciobo about the idea.
Yesterday he praised international visitor survey figures which showed almost 300,000 visitors travelled to the Territory and spent $460 million in the year to March 2017.
“The national and local results are an indication of the Coalition Government’s commitment to boost our tourism industry,” Senator Scullion said.
