A hailstorm battered Alice Springs, located in Australia's Central Desert area and known for its mostly dry climate, on Friday afternoon.

Residents and media have been documenting the anomaly on social media.

Some are expressing great surprise.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology predicts there will be a lighter Saturday morning storm and it will clear by Sunday.
