The Federal Government has been accused of allowing asylum seekers rejected by Australia to be killed, tortured and imprisoned upon return to their home countries.
A coalition of Christian, Muslim and Jewish groups will release a report this week claiming a significant number of those denied refugee status are killed or disappear after they are deported.
Coalition spokeswoman Frances Milne says the report also found a number of asylum seekers are granted refugee status after being denied asylum in Australia.
Ms Milne says the Government needs to take more responsibility for those who seek asylum in AUSTRALIA.
"There are enough examples of people who are killed or disappear, feared dead, tortured or imprisoned (that it) indicates that there is a very real problem in the way we are going about our assessments."
Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock says the Government is not responsible for what happens to asylum seekers after they are deported.
"I see suggestions from time to time about rejected asylum seekers not being able to be found. Well, there are a lot of people around the world that cannot be found for a variety of reasons. What this is about is a misguided campaign that suggests that Australia can send people abroad to monitor the circumstances of something like 8 to 10-thousand rejected asylum seekers."
