Rugby League legend Dale Shearer made his name bursting through defensive lines, but now he's taking on his biggest challenge, by helping tackle cancer.

The Queensland Origin icon has been personally touched by cancer, losing his wife and father to the illness in recent years.

Shearer recently launched a unique challenge he labelled the '40/20', keeping with his Rugby League roots, where for forty days he performed 20 push-ups a day, looking to raise funds and awareness to help the fight against the devastating disease.

The 51 year-old officially finished the challenge on Daffodil Day, but the push-ups will continue.

He has also become an ambassador for Men’s Prostate Cancer, which promotes the need for increased awareness in men to aid early detection.

The last forty days have been a wild ride for Shearer with the challenge taking him throughout Australia and the Pacific, with the former Maroons flyer telling NITV’s League Nation Live his push-up campaign has seen him perform in some interesting places.

“When I was in Vanuatu I got out on a surf ski and did some push-ups on the back of that. I thought it would be man overboard, but it worked out okay,” said Shearer.

The challenge has already been a resounding success, with Shearer generating some much needed funds.

“I think in the last couple of weeks we’d be heading somewhere between $10,000-$15,000. It’s in its infancy; it’s only been a few weeks. It’s going great guns and gaining a lot of momentum”.
