Social media finds police video about snitching accidentally hilarious

Is this a piece of ironic marketing genius, or hilariously out of touch?

Hey cool kids! Want to make some extra cash and impress your partner? Then snitch on those bad graffiti youths you've seen tagging bus stops and other spaces.

That's the message seemingly contained in a new WA Police ad campaign released online that has lit up social media.

It opens with strange off key jazzy music and a youngish couple wandering the streets buying flowers and coffee before sliding into this convincing dialogue.

Girl: "Thanks so much for today, what's the special occasion?"

Guy: "Remember those guys who were tagging the bus stop?"

Fast cut to shots of youths in hoodies and beanies spraying tags onto a suburban bus stop with blaring electro beats.

Resume off key jazz.

Guy: "I got sick of them doing it and tagging, so I reported it and didn't realise it but we got a reward."

Girl: "That's awesome! That's a win win."

The acting looks like it is done by real people rather than actors, and they look like they are about to burst out laughing at various points. Maybe they are just really excited about ending graffiti.

According to WA Police graffiti costs the state $25 million a year. It's such an issue the state government even has an entire website dedicated to graffiti.

Social media was quick to take note after the video was released on WA Police's Facebook page.

We found this other video that tells you how to report a hooded guy on your smartphone.

Then there is an entire series on not being an easy target for criminals - who invariably seem to be young people wearing hoodies. This one is called "Damo".

WA Police ask that If you have information about a graffiti offender, contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. You may be eligible for a reward.

Report graffiti online.
