Two of the members of the Aboriginal cricket team live in Moree in Northwest New South Wales and they are training in the nets at their local park after work.
Fast bowler Alf Newman is set to open the bowling in the tri nations series in Mackay, and Darrel Smith has been named as Vice-Captain.
“To be able to vice-captain your national Aboriginal Team is going to be a great honour to walk out on that field you know it’s not just representing in cricket it's us as a culture.”
The pair have tasted victory in their youth playing in an all-Indigenous team that was the best in Moree.
Alf Newman says it was good achievement
“It would have been in the early 90's oh five grand finals straight.”
The pair are playing against younger locals as they train, and Alf Newman says they’ve also gone on a few trips.
“We'll go play the overs 50s competition down in Albury so that's probably going to be a little bit of a good thing to do.”
Training and matches involve having a chat .... as well as breaking a sweat. Darrel Smith says
"Veterans cricket was set up about men’s health," he said.
"So getting more older Aboriginal blokes still interested in sports, still playing, keeping a healthy lifestyle is the other benefit that we get from it.
"So I know we have a great time when we go away as a bunch of boys for a boys weekend, but it's good to sit down and talk about other stuff that's happening in our lives."
