The Indigenous-led feature film Top End Wedding has cleaned-up in its opening weekend at the Australian cinemas, earning over $1 million and being eclipsed only by behemoth Disney franchise film, Avengers: Endgame.
Australian media industry news website, Mumbrella, has reported the romantic comedy, directed by Batjala Mununjali Wakkawakka man Wayne Blair and co-written by and starring Larrakia woman Miranda Tapsell, as well as a number of other emerging Indigenous stars, was shown on 287 screens across the weekend, second only to Endgame's 1,040 screens.
The rom-com, which involves a soon-to-be-married young couple's race against the clock to save the marriage of the bride's parents before she can have her own wedding, is set in Darwin and has been praised for its shining performances and genuine representations of First Nations characters.
The film has been described as "an Indigenous Australian story that has international crossover potential" and follows on the heels of the international success of director Blair's 2012 feature film, The Sapphires.
