WA Govt freezes household fees as State of Emergency declared

The Western Australian government announced a $607 million stimulus package which includes freezing all household fees and charges including electricity and water as a state of emergency was declared on Sunday.

The West Australian premier Mark McGowan and state treasurer Ben Wyatt announced A multi-million dollar stimulus package to help support West Australians during the coronavirus pandemic was announced by state premier Mark McGowan on Monday.

The $607 million stimulus package will include an immediate freeze on the costs of household utilities such as electricity and water, public transport fares, motor vehicle registration charges and the emergency service levy until at least July 2021.

The measures will come at a cost of $402 million to the WA state government. 

 

“For the first time in 16 years, household fees and charges will be frozen, providing relief and certainty to each and every Western Australian," said Mr McGowan.

"It’s this relief and certainty that can help give Western Australians the confidence to continue to spend and support our local economy during these times." he said.

"Previously the budget included an increase of $127 or 2 per cent in fees and charges, which was the estimated inflation rate for 2020–21.

"By keeping everything frozen that will cost the budget $402 million."
