The treasurer for the West Australian government has announced he will continue his political career after previously announcing his retirement ahead of next year’s state election.

Ben Wyatt told The West Australian newspaper on Monday that he now intended to stand at the 2021 election, declaring he wants to serve his state in its time of need.

“WA is currently facing a health and economic crisis that we have never seen before,” Mr Wyatt said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused me to reflect on my decision last month to not stand as a candidate at the 2021 election… I know the recovery is going to be a significant task, one of which I am determined to be a part of,” he said.

Less than a month ago, Mr Wyatt announced he would be stepping down before the next election due to family reasons, stating he wanted to spend more time with his wife and daughters.
