The 24-year-old Indigenous footballer told AFL media he is looking forward to celebrating the influence his people have had on Australia’s native game.

“It’s always a good round every year to show some leadership in the Indigenous community and to be able to wear a jumper I’m pretty proud of. It’s a great concept”, said Stevens.

The Guernsey was developed by the ‘Pitcha Makin Fellas’ from Ballarat.

The group were assisted in the design process by the Indigenous members of the Bulldogs squad, Stevens and teammate Joel Hamling.

“The jumper symbolises an elder statesman within the community showing leadership and guidance to the younger people.

“It’s a big thing within our community to show leadership to the younger people growing up”.

The club will also wear the jumper in Round 11 when they welcome the West Coast Eagles and the Bulldogs’ women’s side will wear it in their clash with Western Australia on June 5.
