The Alice Springs Domestic and Family Violence Outreach Service have won an Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Award for its work keeping families safe.
They are the only outreach service in the area directed by women, who also work in local town camps.
“I think that it’s really essential that we continue to provide work that’s directed by women themselves,” says Aboriginal Women's Shelter coordinator Dale Fletcher.
In the last three years they've helped more than 450 women and children, and reduced the demand on emergency services among their clients by half.
Ms Fletcher says the outreach program is saving lives by engaging with the women in the community.
“The violence against women in central Australia is significant and a lot of women are at really high risk. By working in an outreach program, all we can do is really support women in their own community, and where they want to receive support, and in the way they want to receive support,” says Ms Fletcher.
