Racial abuse: Ombudsman finds SA police officer 'unsuitable' for service
Published
Disturbing details have emerged about a case of racial abuse by a police officer in South Australia. It's reported the officer told an Aboriginal man - he would like to tie a hose around his neck and then 'set him on fire and drag him around the streets attached to their car'.The police officer also hurled racial obscenities at the man. The officer was NOT sacked nor demoted... and the only apparent disciplinary action was being sent for cultural awareness training. However, an Ombudsman's investigation found the officer was 'entirely unsuitable' for police service. Cheryl Axelby from the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement says the leniency shown to the officer sends the wrong signal.
