Tears and optimism on National Sorry Day – Sorry events in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth
Published
In Queensland a National Sorry Day event in Brisbane heard tales of our mob turning their lives around after the tragedy of the Stolen Generations. But while it was a warm story of survival, there are concerns that too many of our children are still being removed from their families. In Adelaide’s north several hundred people have come together to mark Sorry Day. Organisers say they were surprised by the large turn-out at a new memorial and healing garden dedicated to members of the Stolen Generations and their families near Elizabeth. And in Perth, hundreds of people from across Western Australia gathered to show their ongoing support for the wider Aboriginal community... Traditional men's and women's dance ceremonies allowed guests to get an up close and personal experience of local culture. Interactive stalls were also set up... to share information about the ongoing struggles still faced by our mobs. Artwork was also displayed across the venue... to pay tribute to and respect for the day
