A lot of us got excited when we heard that the avocado prices were set to go down in Australia. Well, we hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it probably won’t happen anytime soon.
The Australian harvest for 2017-2018 should still be strong, but not as much as expected. Avocados Australia CEO John Tyas tells SBS Food that the crops in certain parts of Queensland and New South Wales have already taken a hit because of bad weather, including hail and storms. In some regions, the flowering has simply failed to result in actual fruit on the trees.
But it’s not all bad news, he says: “In Australia, we have growing regions from Western Australia to the Sunshine Coast and North Queensland to Tasmania. This means there are Australian avocados being harvested year-round. Sometimes we have more fruit to offer consumers and sometimes less, but there are always Australian avocados on the shelves.”
Earlier indications were that a record harvest was on the way, and that prices could drop by more than $1 a kilo.
Because the production is now looking moderate this year, and the demand still high, the prices won’t drop as expected, but they shouldn’t jump dramatically either.
Australians eat more avocado than ever - around 3.5 kilos per person per year, so let’s not kid ourselves, we’ll keep buying them even if the prices remain the same. So we thought we’d help you ward off potential avo smash boredom with 11 of our favourite avocado recipes. You’re welcome.
