MESSAGE FROM THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION
ETHIOPIAN NEW YEAR
ENKUTATASH 2019

I wish Australians of Ethiopian ancestry a very Happy Ethiopian New Year.

Enkutatsh

Australian history is filled with examples of people who have escaped terrible regimes, found refuge in Australia, and devoted themselves to this country.

Ethiopians began migrating to Australia from the mid-1970s, fleeing the oppressive Marxist Derg Junta.

In the decades that followed, family members followed those first Ethiopian refugees, and today there are some 17,00Australians with Ethiopian ancestry.

Today is not only the celebration of Ethiopian New Year. It's also a celebration of Ethiopians who came to Australia, embraced our values and way of life, worked hard, raised families, contributed to our nation, and became dedicated, responsible, and respected citizens.

I've seen the successful migration story that defines Australia time and again, including in my hometown of Cooma, where I grew up.

A town that became a new home for many migrants from war-torn Europe, who helped build the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme alongside my grandfather, who served as chief engineer.

It's part of Australia's great migration success story.

Australians of Ethiopian ancestry will share their traditions and hospitality with the wider community today, and when they do, will be reminded again of what unites us as Australians despite small differences.

Our dedication to family and friends, our aspiration to strive and succeed, our love of this great country we all call home.

And our common values and Australian citizenship.

To Australians of Ethiopian ancestry, a very Happy New Year.

 The Hon Angus Taylor MP

Leader of the Opposition
