Industry data shows EVs made up around one in six new vehicles sold in Australia in April 2026. But while sales are rising, questions remain around affordability, charging and whether EVs suit Australian driving conditions.
How much does an electric vehicle cost in Australia?
Electric vehicles still generally cost more upfront than petrol or diesel cars, although prices have dropped as uptake and choice increase.
Hussein Dia, Professor of Transport Technology and Sustainability at Swinburne University of Technology, says more affordable models are now available.
“Three, four years ago, we would struggle to find an EV for less than $50,000. Nowadays they're in the mid-30 range and with government incentives as well, they can be even cheaper.”
Drivers may also be eligible for government incentives depending on where they live.
Employees using salary packaging arrangements may also qualify for a fringe benefits tax discount through novated leasing.
Alex Forrest, Manager of Vehicles and Fuels at the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia, explains:
“If you have a novated lease, you can get a discount on the fringe benefits tax. So that can save you quite some thousands of dollars annually over say a five-year lease period...”
Are electric vehicles cheaper to run?
Compared with petrol and diesel cars, EVs are generally cheaper to run.
It is estimated drivers can save up to 70 per cent on fuel costs and 40 per cent on servicing costs annually.
Professor Dia says lower electricity and servicing costs can add up over time.
Electricity is much cheaper than petrol per kilometer... And EVs, because they are simpler mechanically, the servicing costs are also lower.Hussein Dia
Charging an EV at home is generally cheaper than using public charging stations, so overall running-cost savings may be lower for drivers who rely heavily on public charging.
How far can electric vehicles travel?
Professor Dia says many basic EV models can now travel between 400 and 500 kilometres on a single charge.
But long-distance travel can still require planning.
“Where they fall short is when you need to travel interstate... especially in regional areas. There are thousands of kilometres without fast chargers.”
Can you charge an electric vehicle at home?
Many EV owners charge their cars at home using a standard power outlet.
Alex Forrest says this may suit people driving shorter distances each day.
“If you have off street parking and a power point in your garage or carport, you can definitely charge it using that power cable.”
Drivers travelling longer distances may benefit from installing a dedicated home charger.
If you're having to drive much further daily, do long trips and use more battery power... that's where a home charger does come into play.Alex Forrest
People living in apartments may need approval from their strata body before installing a dedicated EV charger.
What should you know before buying a used EV?
Australia’s second-hand EV market is still relatively new, but consumer confidence in used EVs is increasing.
Experts recommend checking battery warranty, servicing options and after-sales support before buying.
Mr Forrest says consumers should research ownership experiences as well as car reviews.
“Doing your research, not just car reviews, but finding out what people really think of what the ownership experience is like... making sure you know exactly what you're getting for the price that you want to pay, and that it suits your needs as well.”
