সিকদার তাহের আহমদ: সম্প্রতি নিউ সাউথ ওয়েলসে মিনিস্টার’স স্টুডেন্ট কাউন্সিলের ২০২৬ সালের চেয়ারপারসন নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন বাংলাদেশী বংশোদ্ভূত মাহিকা রহমান। তিনি নিউ সাউথ ওয়েলস-এর ক্যামডেন কাউন্সিলের কাউন্সিলর এলিজা রহমান এবং আশিক রহমানের একমাত্র কন্যা। শ্রোতাবন্ধুরা, এখন আমরা কথা বলছি এলিজাবেথ ম্যাকার্থার হাই স্কুলের দশম শ্রেণীর এই শিক্ষার্থী মাহিকা রহমানের সঙ্গে।

মাহিকা রহমান: Assalamualaikum and good afternoon mama. Thanks to you and SBS. আজকের এই interview তে আমাকে নিয়ে আসার জন্যে আমি খুব খুশি হয়েছি।
সিকদার তাহের আহমদ: আপনি তো এ বছর New South Wales এর Ministers Student Council এর chairperson নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন। এ সম্পর্কে আমাদেরকে আর একটু বলেন।
মাহিকা রহমান: জি, আমি, আমি খুব খুশি, honored যে Ministers Student Council also known as DOVES সেখানে chairperson হিসেবে এই বছর আমি elected হয়েছি। এই role এ আমার দায়িত্ব হলো council কে lead দেয়া। এখানে আমার important কাজ হলো Department of Education এর senior executive and deputy premier or Minister for Education and Early Learning the Anup Purkha এর সাথে meeting facilitate করা। আমার আদার দুটিগুলোর মধ্যে আছে অনেক অনুষ্ঠানে আমাদের PhD এর পক্ষে advocacy করা and council কে represent করা। আমরা online and face to face forum এর আয়োজন করি যাতে আমরা আমাদের PhD রা স্কুলে কি ধরনের সমস্যা face করছে সেই বিষয়ে ধারণা পেতে পারি, especially rural and regional areaগুলোতে।
সিকদার তাহের আহমদ: আপনি তো এরকম role এ আগে কখনো কাজের সুযোগ পাননি। তো এটা এখন যে শুরু করছেন, এখানে কি আপনাকে কেউ guide করবে যে এভাবে করো, ওইভাবে করো, এরকম কিছু?
so Minister Student Council এ হলো New South Wales public school এর student দের New South
Wales Education and New South Wales এর Minister for Education এর মধ্যে communication এর primary forum. আমাদের mission হলো to be an innovative student voice হয়ে কাজ করা। যা New South Wales Education Department এর system inclusive and positive changes আনতে help করবে। এই council এ New South Wales এর মধ্যে
eight region থেকে 27 advocate আছে। Every region থেকে তিনজন student elected হন। এই student দের help করেন council secretariat Katrina Stew who is the manager of student councils and governance. যিনি leadership training এর মাধ্যমে তাদের suggestion and direction দেন। আমাদের meeting গুলা every term এ minimum দুইবার হয়, যেখানে student safely কথা বলতে পারে, ওদের problem গুলো নিয়ে discuss করতে পারেন, যা minister এর কাছে তুলে ধরা হয়। minister এর requires এর অনুযায়ী council পুরা বছর, বছর জুড়ে অনেক policy and current issues গুলো নিয়ে input দেয় যা student দের জীবনে affect করে। Besides, student দের মতামত, মতামত জানার জন্য বিভিন্ন forum এ আয়োজন করা হয়।
সিকদার তাহের আহমদ: তো এখন যে কাজ করবেন student দের problem এর কথা বললেন। কোন বিশেষ problem কি আপনার এখন মানে মাথায় আছে যে এটা নিয়ে কাজ করা দরকার?
মাহিকা রহমান: জি, so এই বছরে আমি council এ আমার part contribute করতে চাই to fostering a positive and inclusive environment in schools across New South Wales. Especially একজন বাংলাদেশি background এর Australian born মেয়ে হয়ে আমি জানি আমাদের state এ multiculturalism কত prominent. এখন council এর fifth year of operation চলছে। তাই আমরা কিছু specific areas এ focus করছি। যেমন anti-racism and respectful relationships। আমরা একটা team এর সাথে curriculum co-design করছি যেখানে student voice and agency কে সবচেয়ে বেশি priority দেয়া হচ্ছে।
সিকদার তাহের আহমদ: এবার আমি একটু অন্য প্রসঙ্গে কথা বলব। এত ভালো বাংলা শিখলেন কিভাবে?
মাহিকা রহমান: আমার মা আমাকে আলহামদুলিল্লাহ শিখাইছে। আমার বাবা আর মা,
ওরা আমাকে ভালোমতো শিখাইছে বাঙালি খাবার খাইতে, গল্প করতে, even একটু নাটক দেখতে। [হাসি] এইসব আমি বড় হয়েছি। আর আমাদের এখানে অনেক অনুষ্ঠান হয়। মা বাবা নিয়ে যায় আমাকে বাঙালি culture টা
সিকদার তাহের আহমদ: মানে বাবা মার কাছে শেখা। বা এখানে কি মানে language school যেটা বলে Saturday school এই ধরনের কিছু আছে নাকি?
মাহিকা রহমান: জি, এইখানে আমি ছোটবেলায় আমি বাংলা স্কুলে যাইতাম। এখন বড় হওয়ায় এখন পড়াশোনা চলছে। আমি এখন আর যাই না। তা তো মা বাবা থেকে আমি শিখি।
সিকদার তাহের আহমদ: মানে বলতে পারেন এবং কথা শুনে বোঝেন কিন্তু লেখা বা পড়ার তো সুযোগ নাই, না?
মাহিকা রহমান: আমি একটু পারি। আমি এত ভালো করতে পারি না unfortunately.
সিকদার তাহের আহমদ: একটু পারাটাই অনেক। [হাসি]
মাহিকা রহমান: ধন্যবাদ, ধন্যবাদ।
সিকদার তাহের আহমদ: না, আর আরেকটা বিষয় হচ্ছে, এটা হচ্ছে যে আপনার মা তো উনি রাজনীতির সাথে যুক্ত। উনি এখন local councillor হিসেবে কাজ করছেন। তো আপনি এখন যে এই role এ গেলেন তো এটা কি মায়ের কাছ থেকে কোন অনুপ্রেরণা মানে inspiration পেয়েছেন কিনা?
মাহিকা রহমান: অবশ্যই আমি মা থেকে অনেক inspiration নিছি। আসলে মা আমাকে এইটা নিয়ে refer করছিল আসলে। So আমি অবশ্যই আমার leadership এর একটা like want ছিল। So when মা এটা শুনছে এটা একটা ছিল। আর আমি নিজে আমি বের করছি। আমি চিন্তাই করছি এটা ভালো একটা opportunity
বের, that মা বের করছে। So অবশ্য আমি apply করছি। আলহামদুলিল্লাহ আমি পাইছি। And yeah, আমি আসলে খুব honored that আমি এই position এ আমি আছি today। And I really hope I can do as much as I can for my last year.
সিকদার তাহের আহমদ: সর্বশেষ প্রশ্ন, আমাদের অস্ট্রেলিয়ায় বাংলা speaking people যারা আছে বা আপনার মতো যারা second generation মানে আমাদের জন্য কিছু বলবেন নাকি কোন পরামর্শ?
মাহিকা রহমান: অবশ্যই, thank you mama. Student voice and DUBs আমাদের কথা বলার সুযোগ করে দেয়। But agency is where the action happens. আমরা যতই কথা বলি না কেন unless action is taken then there is no point. We are the future and এটা আমাদের life journey তে empowered feel করতে help করে। That's the power of public education. Inspiring the future generations. Watch this space and we're excited for 2026. I thank SBS and to you mama for allowing me to share my story and I hope I inspired many other young people to come forward for leadership where their voice can be heard loud and proud and they can be confident on what they want to be. I absolutely thank my family, particularly my parents, teachers, friends and of course the entire DOVES for helping me to where I am today. I'm absolutely grateful for all of you. So I want to say thank you to all of you for being there for me.
