As the world marks International Women's Day, there is debate over the best way to increase female participation in the nation's parliament. Australia ranks 49th in the world when it comes to female representation in federal parliament and sits behind countries like Angola and Cameroon. And like other nations, Australia's women face an entrenched gender pay gap, and more than one-third say they have been sexually harassed or discriminated against at work. So getting more women in politics is regarded as crucial to overcome such overt discrimination.
